With the winning bid of $12,500 by activist Tom Gregory, one of the shirt/suit/tie ensembles worn by Sean Penn in his Academy Award-winning portrayal of real-life hero Harvey Milk in Focus Features’ Milk was successfully auctioned off over the weekend on the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation’s site www.clothesoffourback.org to equally benefit both Variety – The Children’s Charity of Southern California and the Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk High School, in New York City.
The Foundation hosted the online auction of Academy Award-nominated costume designer Danny Glicker’s specially created ensemble as seen in Milk. In 2006, Focus also auctioned off for charity two shirts memorably showcased in Brokeback Mountain for which Tom Gregory also made the winning bid.
Focus CEO James Schamus who made the announcement said, “We congratulate Tom Gregory on owning a piece of film history, and applaud his generous contribution. The benefits to Variety and the Harvey Milk School are tangible in terms of the dollar amounts. What’s even more gratifying is how the participation of all concerned validates Harvey’s legacy of people getting involved, getting inspired, and making a difference for the next generation.”
The auction was for the shirt, suit, tie and pin which Mr. Glicker and his department crafted to precisely match and re-create the ensemble worn by Mr. Milk on November 7th, 1978, the Election Night on which he celebrated the statewide defeat of Proposition 6, which sought to ban gays from teaching in California public schools and to remove known homosexuals and their supporters from their posts, and which Mr. Milk had fought so tirelessly against in the “No on 6” campaign.
On the eve of the California Senate and Assembly’s voting on the resolutions to overturn Proposition 8, the measure to ban same sex marriage, Mr. Gregory said, “The story of Harvey Milk only highlights the shame of those who vote to deny marriage equality to lesbians and gay men.”
