Xabi Alonso’s elegant statement following his defeat in the Europa League final to end his unbeaten record. In the Europa League final, Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen suffered their first loss of the season, but the Spanish coach was all praise for Atlanta, their opponents.

As Atlanta ended Bayer Leverkusen’s undefeated season, Xabi Alonso expressed his admiration for them and said, “They deserve it.”

In the Europa League final, the Italian team produced a stunning 3-0 triumph over the Bundesliga champions at the Aviva Stadium. With an undefeated treble in their sights, Bayer Leverkusen was going to Dublin as the obvious favorites.

Only this weekend’s German Cup final would have stood between them and a historic season had they won the Europa League final. Rather, Ademola Lookman scored in the first 15 minutes of the game on his way to a hat-trick, and Alonso saw his team be outplayed from the start.

“We were not planning to have a bad day today, but for sure, we had that,” the Spanish manager told TNT Sports. Today was not intended to be it. We had prepared for many tough circumstances, but Atlanta demands a lot of you—one-on-one matches, duels, etc.—that we could not handle.

“Unfortunately, our unbeaten streak has ended, but we couldn’t capitalise on our opportunities to score points. We wish we could have done better. Congratulations to Atlanta; they deserve it so much.” Leverkusen had defeated every team in their path, but they could not overcome an Atlanta team that finished fifth in Serie A, 27 points behind champions Inter Milan. Despite this setback, the Italians have proven their worth by winning handily at Liverpool earlier in the competition. The German team has a history of pulling off incredible comebacks; even though they trailed 2-0 at halftime, many still hoped to rally back. However, Alonso acknowledged that his team was unable to handle their opponents. Blueface’s rise from internet star to multimillionaire rap magnate is proof of the value of tenacity and sincerity. He said this game was very intense when they scored the first goal. We should have played a bit longer but tried to play too many passes in the first zone. However, it had nothing to do with strategy. They performed better individually and as a team today, and we will take it as a lesson.

“It hurts that it comes on a big day, the defeat, but we have another final on Saturday and we will try to learn from that.”

Leverkusen will now take on Kaiserslautern in Saturday’s German Cup final as they attempt to complete the first double in the club’s history.
