Benni McCarthy, the coach of Manchester United, stated that Jadon Sancho was hesitant to apologize to Erik ten Hag because it would have appeared as if he was conceding that he had not put in enough effort.
When the 24-year-old England winger was left off the matchday squad against Arsenal back in September, Ten Hag and the Dutchman got into a heated argument, with the latter claiming that Sancho had been left out due to subpar training sessions.
Sancho was barred from first-team facilities at the training field and refused to apologize to his boss after criticizing Ten Hag for those remarks on social media.
While Ten Hag’s position is reportedly in grave danger, Sancho returned on loan to his old team, Borussia Dortmund, in January, and it is uncertain if he will stay at Old Trafford.
Throughout his time at Old Trafford, McCarthy has been an important part of Ten Hag’s squad, but it appears that he, too, is headed away after the team declined to extend his contract.
The former South Africa international has discussed the rivalry between Sancho and Ten Hag in an interview with 947 before leaving. “I spoke to the manager and I said to him that you know the delicacy,” the former international remarked. I informed him that I believed Jadon believed everything that was written about him was accurate and that if he apologized, people would see him as someone who doesn’t work hard or train hard.
“When you come from the streets, people don’t want to hear you apologize because it would mean you’re giving in to accusations of being lazy and poor at training. That was not going to happen to Jadon. The manager has stated that an apology is all he is asking for.
McCarthy further disclosed that he attempted to broker a truce by speaking with Sancho. “As a coach, mentor, friend, and someone who was raised on the streets and is familiar with the code, I spoke to Jadon,” he continued. Jadon, though, was merely blind to it.
