His father served in the US House of Representatives for the 8th and 9th for the state of Tennessee. Harold later succeeded his father when his beloved father retired from his position in 1997.

Harold Jr. entered the 1996 election after Harold Sr. decided not to seek re-election for a 12th term in office. He rapidly became the front-runner in the Democratic primary, which was widely seen as the actual election in the heavily Democratic and predominately black 9th district.

Ford designed his last semester of law school without any classes on Mondays or Fridays, allowing him to return to Memphis for an additional long weekend each week to continue his campaign. As expected, he easily won the Democratic primary, and in November he was elected.

Ford’s team described the late filings as a “minor error” because Ford had already completed the required financial disclosure statements for the visits at the time they occurred.

On November 8, Ford conceded the election to Corker after falling short of Corker’s margin of victory by under three points.
