Leverkusen became the first team to go undefeated during the entire Bundesliga season. After defeating Augsburg 2-1 at home to extend their winning run in all competitions to 51 games, Bayer Leverkusen became the first team in Bundesliga history to go the entire season unblemished.
Victor Boniface and Robert Andrich’s goals placed Leverkusen, who play Atalanta in the Europa League final and the German Cup final this week, on track to win. Leverkusen was crowned champions for the first time in April.
“Well worth it. After defeating Bremen to win the title, that was our objective. Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen’s coach, expressed his happiness and satisfaction with the team.
On the last day of the league season, Cologne lost 4-1 at Heidenheim, relegating them.
Union Berlin overcame Freiburg 2-1 in stoppage time to avoid relegation, leapfrogging Bochum, who will now face second-division Fortuna Duesseldorf in a two-leg play-off following their 4-1 loss to Werder Bremen.
After 12 minutes, Amine Adli pushed Augsburg goalkeeper Tomas Koubek into a mistake, recovering the ball and setting up Boniface for a close-range tap-in. This gave Leverkusen the lead.
After 27 minutes, midfield standout Andrich backheeled in a rebound to double Leverkusen’s lead.
Mert Komor, a teenage sensation from Augsburg, gave the visitors a response on his debut start, scoring a spectacular goal in the 62nd minute, but Leverkusen held on to win in front of what could be a historic week.
Conversely, Union, which was competing in the Champions League against teams like Real Madrid as recently as December, found itself tied 1-1 against Freiburg at home in stoppage time and was guaranteed a relegation playoff matchup with Duesseldorf.
Michael Gspurning was sent off with four minutes left, reducing Union to ten men, but he scored a penalty right before stoppage time.
Janik Haberer was there to convert the rebound and preserve Berlin after Kevin Volland missed the spot-kick.
After defeating Duesseldorf 4-3 at Union Berlin two weeks ago, Bochum appeared to have clinched top-division football. However, they now need to win a home-and-away playoff match against Duesseldorf.
Relegated Cologne and Darmstadt will be joined in the second tier by the loser.
– Bayern’s “series of big mistakes” – Serhou Guirassy scored twice as Stuttgart defeated Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-0 at home. This allowed Stuttgart to pass Bayern Munich, who fell to Hoffenheim 4-2 under the direction of Andrej Kramaric, and move up to second place.
In spite of Harry Kane’s injury, Bayern led 2-0 after just six minutes of play, thanks to goals from Alphonso Davies and Mathys Tel.
Two minutes later, Maximilian Beier, named to Germany’s Euros squad on Thursday, reduced the deficit to 2-1 by taking advantage of a mistake made by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
The game drastically changed as Kramaric scored three goals in the next twenty minutes.
Bayern did not place among the top two finishes since 2010–11.
We lost the game due to several significant individual errors. We allowed the opposition back into the game, played defensively, and lost 2-0,” stated departing manager Thomas Tuchel.
“This has happened to us far too often.”
In his final home game, Marco Reus of Borussia Dortmund celebrated his farewell with a 4-0 victory over Darmstadt, netting one goal and setting up another.
Reus assisted Ian Maatsen for the first goal after thirty minutes in Dortmund’s penultimate competitive match before June’s Champions League final against Real Madrid at Wembley. Eight minutes later, he added another from a free kick.
Donyell Malen and Julian Brandt added goals in the second half to complete the victory.
Eintracht Frankfurt overcame a two-goal deficit to tie RB Leipzig 2-2 at home, while Mainz overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Wolfsburg 3-1.
