Nina Hartley was born on March 11, 1959, in Berkeley, California, to a Jewish mother and a Lutheran father. Nina grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her siblings are a sister and two brothers, and she is the youngest of the four. Nina’s parents were communists resulting in her father appearing on a blacklist in 1957 after converting to Buddhism when still young.
She graduated from Berkeley High School in 1977 and attended San Francisco State University, taking an undergraduate nursing course, and graduating in 1985 Magna Cum Laude.
